Chelsea has filed a complaint with the Premier League after their Sunday visit to Villa Park was delayed due to stewards eating ice cream.
Chelsea, according to The Athletic, lodged a complaint with the Premier League before to the start of their final match of the 2020-21 season.
Chelsea went on to lose 2-1 to Aston Villa, but they still qualified for the Champions League next season after London rivals Tottenham Hotspur defeated Leicester City 4-2.
What went wrong?
Chelsea were delayed outside Villa Park prior of Sunday’s Premier League encounter.
The Chelsea team van did not have authorization from Aston Villa’s head of security to grant them admission, according to the Daily Mail, with stewards munching Flakes and raspberry sauce ice creams blocking the visitors from entering the stadium.
Chelsea, according to The Athletic, complained to the Premier League over the delay before kickoff.
Chelsea were eventually permitted to enter the stadium, but only after a brief delay. They requested a postponement of kickoff from the Premier League, but their request was denied.
Why is there such a reaction?
Thomas Tuchel is thorough in his match preparations, so it’s understandable that he and Chelsea were irritated by what they saw as an unnecessary delay in their arrival at Villa Park, and that they requested that kick-off be delayed as a result.
Chelsea fans barricaded Fulham Road outside Stamford Bridge last month in protest of the club’s intention to join the European Super League. Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes on that occasion, and they followed up with a similarly poor performance in a goalless draw against Brighton and Hove Albion at home.
For a variety of reasons, wider sympathy for Chelsea will be hard to come by, but Tuchel and his players will now be focused on making the Champions League final preparations as frictionless as possible.
What about the match, by the way?
On the final day of the Premier League season, Chelsea were defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa in a shock result.
Despite their dramatic 4-2 loss to Spurs, Leicester remained in fourth place by a single point.
Villa took a comfortable lead thanks to Bertrand Traore’s first-half goal and Anwar El Ghazi’s penalty, before Ben Chilwell scored a late consolation.
Following the game, Thomas Tuchel said that Chelsea were fortunate to have clinched a place in the Champions League for next season.
“We are fortunate Tottenham did the job for us,” Tuchel added. We arrived with the intention of winning and putting any worries to rest, but that was not feasible.
“If we are going to have a favourable outcome, we need to tweak details and be spot-on on Saturday.”
