The full trailer for Universal’s upcoming musical Dear Evan Hansen was released today. Ben Platt, who won a Tony Award for his role as Evan Hansen, an alienated and nervous high school student, reprises his Tony-winning role. Julianne Moore plays his mother in the film adaptation. The cast also includes Kaitlyn Dever, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, and Colton Ryan.

Things are kept very tight in the Broadway production. To emphasise the effect of social media on the storey, sets are limited to a few houses and a massive wall of screens. However, the film greatly broadens the scope of the situation (He’s climbing the tree!). It will be important to see if the film has the same effect as the near-claustrophobic stage version.
The songs, such as “Waving Through a Window,” “Forever,” and “You Will Be Found,” are all present. It’s unclear what they’re going to do with Julianne Moore’s character’s songs, or whether Adams will have her own songs in the film.
Then there’s the question of Platt’s age. With a new wig, they’re obviously attempting to make him look younger. The jury is still out on that one. UPDATE: It’s possible that this is Ben Platt’s real hair. Keep an eye out…
Even, I couldn’t help but tear up as I watched the trailer with my kids, who adore the Benj Pasek and Justin Paul score. I’m a wuss.
On September 24, Dear Evan Hansen will be released exclusively in theatres.
