According to Insider, Joel Greenberg, a former Florida county tax collector and Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) right-hand man, will plead guilty to sex trafficking as part of a plea bargain with the Justice Department.
Greenberg was reportedly able to plead guilty to any of the 33 charges levelled against him on Thursday. As part of his plea bargain, Insider reveals that the charge sheet has been reduced to only six charges. Sex trafficking, wire fraud, and identity theft are among the charges.
Gaetz, who is under federal investigation for his suspected role in the Greenberg case, will be disappointed by the deal. According to Insider, Greenberg will agree to cooperate fully with the government in his case and any other related crimes, implying that he could reveal information to investigators looking into his ties to Gaetz.
““I’m sure Matt Gaetz is not feeling very comfortable today.” Greenberg’s defence attorney, Fritz Scheller, said last month when he first floated the possibility that his client would soon sign a plea deal.
The congressman has already been pulled into Greenberg’s case.
Greenberg alleged that he and Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl in a confession letter he wrote in the final days of Trump’s presidency in a futile effort to secure a pardon, and explained how he would set up paid sexual activities for the Florida congressman using Venmo and Cash App.
Greenberg paid more than 40 women through the applications, according to documents obtained by The Daily Beast, as well as Gaetz’s frequent payments to Greenberg. Greenberg says he and Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old child, and one payment was branded with her nickname.
Twelve women previously told The Daily Beast about their experiences with Greenberg, with the majority claiming that they were forced to drink or use drugs before sex at his parties. Four of the anonymous women claimed that Greenberg forced them to have sex with him, and one claimed that she only had sex with him after being given “an endless supply of drugs.”
Gaetz has not been charged with any crime and denies paying for sex. Greenberg is scheduled to appear in court next week to enter a guilty plea.
