Gladys Knight honored the late, great Marvin Gaye with a touching tribute during Wednesday’s . Knight was joined by Sheila E. on percussion, Israel Houghton on guitar, D Smoke on keyboards and Adam Blackstone on bass for a powerful cover of Gaye’s “What Going On?” Prior to the performance, Knight remembered Gaye, who died in 1984.
“I miss you so much,” said Knight. “I love your music, the way you write, the way you sing, the whole thing. You touch my spirit every time you sing a song…I do miss you, and this is one that is really relevant even today. We need to say to the rest of the world that we can love each other, and we need to bring forth what’s going on today.”
The amazing performance was well received on social media. Many people felt that Knight did an excellent job covering the famous song.

The Grammy special celebrated music’s relationship with progressive social and political movements. With social justice being a focus in society, it was apropos to honor the music of Marvin Gaye, which was born out of the civil rights movement of the 1960’s.
