Manchester United could turn their attention to Sevilla defender Jules Kounde if they are unable to land Raphael Varane.
Varane has only 12 months remaining on his contract with Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants want around €70m to sell him.
United are reluctant to pay the price and Sport claims that they could switch their attention elsewhere if Madrid refuse to negotiate.
Kounde has been on their radar over the past year. There is a release clause worth €80m on his contract with Sevilla.
However, the La Liga club acknowledge that the clause is steep. They are reportedly willing to accept around €55m this summer.
United could face competition for his services from Chelsea. The Blues are also long-term admirers of the French centre-back.
Kounde was the subject of interest from Manchester City last summer, but their proposal of €50m was turned down by Sevilla.
The La Liga club are now open to selling him. The Cityzens are unlikely to return for his services after landing Ruben Dias last summer.
