Is there anybody else who is more associated with the PGA Championship than John Daly? This is a rhetorical query.
There isn’t any such thing. Daly has made the PGA Championship his annual Eagles farewell tour, turning up in some ludicrous pair of pants to serve up entertainment and controversy in equal measure 30 years after his out-of-this-world triumph at Crooked Stick in 1991. So far, 2021 hasn’t been any different.
You’re looking at a true athlete, ladies and gentlemen. And, lest you think we’re kidding, how many 55-year-olds do you know who could down a Coke and a Pall Mall (or a golf tee standing in for a Pall Mall, believe what you want) for breakfast, then go out and do it on the first hole of one of the most difficult courses in recent major championship history?
That chip-in birdie propelled Daly to the top of the leaderboard for a brief and glorious moment. Big John’s luck is definitely running out, but it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
