Target’s deal on Echo speakers is better than Amazon’s

What’s better than one of Amazon’s smart speakers? A pair of them, naturally. It’s nice having a voice-powered assistant in multiple rooms — and right now you can do that on the cheap. For a limited time, and while supplies last, Target will give you a free Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker when you buy one at regular price ($50).

To get this deal, just add two Dots to your shopping cart. This works out to just $25 per unit, a price that beats even Amazon Prime Day (when the Dot dipped to $30).

True to its name, the orb-shaped Dot is on the smaller side. Although it can do all the fabled “Alexa” things, like answering questions, telling you the weather and interacting with other smart-home devices (“Alexa, turn on the bedroom lamp”), it’s not the best choice if you plan to listen to music.

For that, consider choosing the larger, better-sounding full-size Echo — and taking advantage of Target’s deal on that model: Buy two Echo smart speakers and save $80. That gets you out the door for $120, a per-speaker price of just $60.

(Pro tip: If you have a Target RedCard and use it to pay for either of these deals, you’ll save an extra 5 percent.)

It’s worth noting that both the Echo and Echo Dot are available in your choice of colors, and they don’t have to be the same; you could add, say, a Charcoal Echo and a Twilight Blue Echo to your cart and still get the discount.

Target offers free shipping on these, though if your local store has them in stock, you might be able to pick them up as early as today.

Even if you use just a fraction of the Echo’s capabilities, I think you’ll find it a welcome addition. I use mine for weather reports, music, timers and occasional kitchen-related questions (“Alexa, how many ounces in a cup?”). And guess what: You now have the option of using a male voice and wake-word name: Ziggy.
