Following a clash over playing Holi on campus, violence erupted on the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus, with inmates of the Birla and Lal Bahadur Shastri hostels attacking one another with brickbats. The incident occurred late Tuesday, and the police force has been heavily deployed on campus.
Prof Anand Chaudhary, BHU’s chief proctor, said that a large number of students have begun to leave their hostel rooms due to the spread of Covid-19 in many hostels on campus, as well as the upcoming Holi festival on March 29.
Students from Birla and LBS hostels were playing colours on the hostel road between the two hostels’ buildings when a disagreement arose, and they clashed.
The situation quickly escalated. Some Birla hostel prisoners climbed up onto the hostel’s terrace and began pelting stones from there.
The police force was rushed to the campus after the BHU administration was alerted, according to SP City Vikas Chandra Tripathi. Both hostels’ inmates were escorted back to their rooms.
Students from both groups were approached by officials from the university administration, hostels, the proctorial board, and the police, who persuaded them to return to their hostel rooms.
Officials say the situation is still tense but under control.
